Module 1: Data and Information
Introduction to basic concepts; data management and data integration
You will learn what digital data actually is and how it is created. Following this, you will gain an insight into how large amounts of data are managed, retrieved and processed so that they are available to us as a source of information. In this e-learning course, you will independently work through the content online via the WiseLearn learning platform. You will be guided through video sequences and exercises and can also test your acquired knowledge. The module comprises approx. 12 hours of self-study.

The Lecturers
Prof. Dr. Abraham Bernstein, Professor of Computer Science, is Director of the Digital Society Initiative at the University of Zurich (UZH). He studied computer science at ETH Zurich and received his PhD from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His research interests include the semantic web, data mining, heterogeneous data integration and the interplay between social and technical elements of computer science.
Dr. Sven Helmer is a senior researcher at the Departement of Informatics at the University of Zurich (UZH). He studied computer science at the University of Karlsruhe and received his doctorate from the University of Mannheim. He has lectured and conducted research at the Free University of Bolzano and the University of London. His research interests include database systems, database management and query optimization.
Prof. Dr. Michael Krauthammer, holder of the Chair of Medical Informatics, leads a newly established interdisciplinary team associated with the University Hospital Zurich and the Departement of Quantitative Biomedicine at the University of Zurich. He studied medicine at the University of Zurich and holds a PhD in Biomedical Informatics from Columbia University, New York. His research interests are in biomedical informatics and machine learning in healthcare.
